10,000 Champions: David Langer & Andy Young of GroupSpaces

Ex-Oxford University graduates now running one of Britain's most high-potential oniine community businesses.

GroupSpaces is a London-based company founded in 2007 by CEO David Langer and CTO Andy Young. The business operates in the popular collaborative working space; Huddle.net is another UK company in the space, which has also recently raised money. GroupSpaces has raised £860k from Index Ventures.

Young and Langer were, apparently, "frustrated with their experiences of managing groups while at Oxford University." GroupSpaces' software now serves customers in over 30 countries. The firm's big proposition is that it helps club organisers run their operations better, especially with the withdrawal of cheques.

Here's the coverage of the deal from our sister title, Real Deals:

"Angel investors Dave McClure, Chris Sacca, Simon Levene, Meagan Marks, Ariel Poler and Quincy Smith of CODE Advisors also participated in the funding, as did existing backers Stephen Bullock, and Simon and Michael Blakey of Avonmore Developments.

"Index Ventures partner Mike Volpi will join the company’s board."

David Langer writes a really interesting blog about entrepreneurship, called Freed from the Matrix where he serves up some really interesting advice about angel investing. He also writes for student online newspaper The Gateway. Here's an online interview with Langer.

Here are the biogs and Twitter links:

"David has been President, Treasurer, Captain, Webmaster and a member of groups with activities ranging from triathlon to table tennis. Having gradually realised that there must be a better way to manage these groups, he cofounded GroupSpaces while studying for a Mathematics degree at Oxford University and was subsequently awarded 2nd place in the 2007 UK Graduate of the Year competition.

"David has previously worked at JP Morgan, McKinsey & Company and Lehman Brothers, and has a strong background in finance, statistical analysis and sales. When not working on GroupSpaces or triathlon training, David blogs about entrepreneurship at www.davidlanger.co.uk and is also Entrepreneurship Columnist for national student newspaper The Gateway."
