Richard Branson beats Jesus in the role model stakes

By Catherine Woods, published 2 years ago in Archive.

I’m sure this comes as no surprise to Richard Branson but a new poll from Opinium Research has named the British entrepreneur as a more popular role model for children than Jesus.

Branson also beat the likes of Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King.

However, he missed out on top spot. Survey respondents considered family members to be the most ideal role model for children.

Here's the top ten:

1. A family member2. Richard Branson3. Jesus Christ4. A teacher5. Nelson Mandela6. Diana Princess of Wales7. Jamie Oliver8. Winston Churchill9. Martin Luther King10. Bill Gates

I'm sure I won't be the only person to find this headline offensive and do wonder if you would be as prepared to make this statement in relation to the gods of other faiths. I have nothing against Richard Branson but doubt if his name will still be around in 2000 years'time! It is perhaps because people give so little heed to Christian values and principles that our country and indeed, our world, are in the sad state they are in today.

If the survey placed Allah or Buddha or any other god in third place instead of Jesus, I can assure you the statement would remain the same. You’ve got me thinking, though. Will Branson’s name still be around in 2000 years’ time….? Anyone want to hazard a guess?

If this is Real Business then I worry for the free market economy. This list might prove how few inspiring people there are in the world or maybe how few people we get to learn about. I suppose we should celebrate that a teacher did better than Nelson Mandela.

This poll can be answered with a question raised by my daughter recently. Is Jesus and God one and the same. My answer to her was,in essence they are one but distinctly three in personality, which is a yes!To all living in the global village,we are to prioritise the Creator to that which is created. He,the Created One has the highest position bestowed on Him by God the Father and all the rest will confess, now or later that He is Number One,LORD.
