Focus on: Homeworking

img one

The home is now the most popular start-up location in the UK. More than 60 per cent of new businesses today are started from home. But already, homeworking is an important lifeblood of the UK today – contributing £364bn to the annual economy and employing 28 per cent of the workforce.

We are now seeing a surge in the popularity of homeworking as more organisations realise that this modern day approach to our working lives is as beneficial to the business as it is to the employees. Increased business productivity and decreasing overheads makes for better profit margins. Many companies say that loyalty to the firm has also increased as their employees are more content due to the improved work/life balance that homeworking affords.

Indeed, the benefits to employees are numerous: the disappearance of the daily commute, improved health, the ability to harmonise work with family commitments and better employment prospects for disadvantaged groups.

And society as a whole benefits as reduced transport congestion and pollution helps to minimise the country’s carbon footprint. With green credentials high on the business agenda, home working is becoming increasingly attractive.

All of these benefits coupled with the radical advances in technology are leading many to now ask the question: ‘Is the home going to become the new-age workplace?’
