IT entrepreneur goes green

Entrepreneur-led software company Access Accounting has launched what it says is the first accounting package that offers an integrated method of measuring carbon emissions.

The new functionality in its Access Dimensions accounting package enables businesses to account for emissions when they’re lodging day-to-day transactions.
Access Accounting founder Alistair O'Reilly says he was astounded when he realised there was nothing like it on the market. He says: "I think it’s like all original thinking or really simple and bright ideas – it’s just so obvious that you ask ‘how on earth had it not been thought of before?’. We really do think this is the smartest way for a business to measure its carbon footprint – and without adding complexity and cost."
Access has worked with DEFRA and the Carbon Trust to add the “green functionality” to its product, factoring in their figures and guidelines on carbon emissions.
The company says the only other available carbon measurement tools, such as online calculators or bespoke systems, don’t offer the ease of use and cost efficiency of its product. The accounting for carbon emissions functionality is available with the latest version of Access Dimensions software at no extra charge.
O'Reilly says: "We started the business on the basis that we were going to make emerging and mainstream technology available and affordable to mid-size companies to use so they can be more competitive."
