More people claiming jobless benefits

There are now more than one million people seeking jobless benefits in Britain. It’s the first time in seven years the number has been so high.

The statistics come as it's announced that Woolworths stores will start closing next week with all premises shutting down by 5 January 2009. The retail group employs around 30,000 people.

It also follows last month’s revelation that unemployment had risen to an 11-year high.
