Jan Cavelle

Jan runs The Jan Cavelle Furniture Company based in Suffolk, which makes furniture for the top end of the interior design trade. The business offers a wide range of their own designs plus the ability to make to order.

Jan started the business originally out of desperation when finding herself a single mum with two young children to support. Originally, she started on a shelf under her stairs at home, buying in furniture as needed. However, she built this up through acquiring two different cottage industry businesses.

The company has expanded gradually over the last decade and employs between 30 and 40 staff members.

The economy has defeated Joe Public

I’m not convinced we’re over the worst of this recession. In fact, I’m inclined to believe that all those headlines about economic growth figures came from pre-election government spin doctors, trying to persuade the British public that Labour’s policies had worked a treat.

Oh for a business with no staff

We're approaching the end of the third quarter of our financial year – and we're way, way behind the targets I had set in our business plan, which is a bit grim to say the least.
