Ask Timpo: What's the best way to keep my employees in the loop?

Q: Is there a role for "all-staff" emails from the chairman? I am considering a weekly internal communication to my 480 staff, but want it to make the right impression and not appear like a tablet of stone from on high?

A: Emails are great for day-to-day conversation, but when it comes to spreading your company message, your suspicions are well founded – they don't give the right impression.

General emails are impersonal – everyone knows how easy they are to write. The weekly email would suggest to your team that you have not taken a lot of trouble – it is a personal message sent in an impersonal form.

A blog would be better – people are much more interested in what you do than what you have to say.
