It’s not every day you get to quiz a top-flight football manager about the challenges, highs and lows of the job, but that's what happened at the inaugural League Managers Association (LMA) Business Club event, in association with Real Business.

Fulham’s Roy Hodgson gave guests a unique and personal insight into what it takes to succeed in one of the most high pressure and high profile management roles there is.
The theme of the evening – “winning against the odds” – was certainly apt considering Fulham’s recent unexpected 2-0 victory over Premier League leaders Manchester United. The odds, incidentally, were 15-1 against Hodgson’s side.
If the Fulham manager was still basking in the glory, however, he was giving nothing away. Fielding questions from host John Inverdale and an audience of some 70 invited business leaders, Hodgson spoke as a man with enough experience of management, both in England and internationally, to take the highs and lows of the business on the chin.
The manager revealed insights into everything from team strategy and half-time pep-talks to the complex and often challenging relationships that exist between the manager and the media, his team and the board.
Guests also got a sneak preview of The Manager, a new publication in association with the LMA. This – like future Business Club events – will provide exclusive access to some of the most successful leaders in football and business, and bring management issues to life. For any leader trying to get the best out of their team, it promises to be an essential read.

Great event. Hodgson is utterly businesslike. Key messages for other business leaders: are you doing everything you can to improve your team's performance? That was the big question Hodgson and team kept posing when battling against relegation last season. When he first took over at Fulham, when the club was at rock-bottom, he swiftly identified which team members were up for the challenge; those that weren't got despatched to train with the reserves. Other strong messages: young managers (or leaders anywhere) to get an experienced mentor figure alongside them when times get tough. And, in management, it's the little, personal touches that count. Recalling the man of the moment (Brian Clough), Hodgson said that Old Big'Ead would invite players down to the bar on the eve of a big match - totally against all received wisdom but a brilliant way of calming frayed nerves. Business and football - they've got much to learn from one another. I'm really looking forward to the next event.
