Ask Timpo: how do you cope with stress?
Q: Do you suffer from stress? What do you do about it?
A: I’ve suffered from periodic bouts of stress for more than 35 years. It is an affliction I would not wish on anyone, but it is comforting to know I am not alone – I understand 20 per cent of us suffer from time to time.
Those that never experience these “black periods” in their life find it difficult to understand. Some suggest you should get a grip or snap out of it. They don’t realise there is nothing more you want than a relaxed day full of purpose, clear thinking and achievement. Instead, you’re constantly turning things over in your mind without coming to any conclusions. Your mood moves from depressed misery to nervous apprehension. Every morning you hope it has gone but, before breakfast, you know it will be another difficult day.
Many years ago, a doctor explained to me that stress is nature’s way of saying “enough is enough”. I’m thankful that early on I realised I needed his help and wasn’t ashamed of popping pills.
He told me to think of it in the same way you would a common cold. You might not know how you got it or how long it will last but at least you know that it will definitely disappear.
