Never one to miss a marketing opportunity, Will King’s viral campaign launched on Twitter today, just as headlines about The King’s Speech’s phenomenal success at last night’s Oscars were filtering through the news wires the world over.

At last count, the viral had racked up 1,000 hits on YouTube and is trending on Twitter – not bad for a video shot on budget is just five hours at a studio in London.

Will King, who plays the role of Colin Firth’s King George in the parody, says The King Speech’s success offered him a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to make a one-off parody that would grab attention.

Speaking into the original microphone used in the film, King’s version takes a gentle swipe at rivals (g-g-g) Gillette, for the high prices of its razors.

“Our parody is an example of how King of Shaves thinks differently to our rivals, using our marketing spend in a fun and more creative way. Working with Tiger Savage [founder] of Tiger’s Eye, we came up with this idea following the massive success of the film and the obvious link – that we’re both Kings! I’m not sure I’ll win any awards for my role in this ad, though!”

Last year, King of Shaves turned over £24m is currently number two to Gillette in the UK.
