Making money from energy savings

Saving energy is good for the environment and for your bank balance, and it’s a habit Opus Energy MD Charlie Crossley Cooke is encouraging among his customers.

Opus Energy, which supplies electricity to the business sector, is investing £5m in smart meters. These meters allow your energy consumption data to be read remotely every half hour and are available to Opus customers for free.

“A smart meter gives you an accurate bill and it means you don’t have to have someone on your premises, which in today’s world is pretty inefficient,” Crossley Cooke explains.

“The other part is it allows you to see when you consume the most energy during the day. Once you understand and measure it, you can go about saving it.”

He adds: “It may seem strange to persuade a customer to use less, but if it helps you to keep a customer, we’ll make money out of them in the long term.”

Cooke started Opus Energy in 2002. Turnover is expected to hit £100m this fiscal year.
