Stelios: entrepreneurs can transform the world
Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, one of Britain's most successful entrepreneurs and brand-builders, believes that entrepreneurship has the power to change lives for the better.
Sir Stelios led the transformation of the airline sector in the nineties when he launched easyJet. His no-frills service, bargain-basement ticket prices and flights to regional airports, proved a smash hit and, along with deadly rival RyanAir, heralded in a new era of travel.
Stelios has since gone on to apply his model to the hotel, cruise, bus, cinema and other sectors, making the garish "easy" orange an international brand. And, through the Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneur of the Year, run by Leonard Cheshire Disability, he has highlighted inspirational stories of entrepreneurship in the UK.
This remarkable entrepreneur will be sharing his experience and insights in transforming industries at our Investec Entrepreneurs' Summit on May 12, 2010. He'll also be describing some of the remarkable stories that have come through his Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs. Last year's award winner John Pickup, for example, is building a successful international company that specialises in supplying amputee extras and stuntmen for Hollywood films, television and for armed forces casualty training. Through his Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, Stelios is supporting firms such as Amputees in Action in reaching their full potential.
John Pickup himself will also be speaking at the Summit, describing how he's overcome obstacles to build his fast-growing business.
Sir Stelios joins a remarkable line-up of major entrepreneur speakers at the 2010 Summit at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square. The Summit will mark the official launch of the 2010 Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneur of the Year in the UK. Taking place just days after a likely General Election, Britain's top entrepreneurs will be sharing thoughts on what they want from a new government; how they see the economy in the years ahead.
