Luxury luggage firm inspired by Formula One to launch £3,500 case

A luxury luggage firm used by the A-list has been inspired by Formula One to introduce a very limited edition series of cases to mark its 120th anniversary, pricing the goods at £3,500 apiece.

Launched in Germany back in 1897, Globe-Trotter operations moved to Britain in 1932 and has stayed put ever since, producing its luxury luggage line in Hertfordshire.

With a milestone of 120 years now under its belt, the travel brand was keen to celebrate with an item that takes its reputation for luxury luggage to the next level.

In partnership with engineering and design business Hypetex, Globe-Trotter will introduce 120 silver carbon fibre cases in its Centenary design.

Hypetex was chosen as a partner for the development due to its specialist knowledge of carbon fibre innovations, which engineers secured working in Formula One – the inspiration for the case.

In its own words, Hypetex said: “We’re passionate about providing solutions and advice on the use of carbon fibre composites and experts in developing innovative concepts.

“Our dedicated engineers have spent more than 20 years refining materials for optimum performance in Formula One racing and are now applying that knowledge to our clients’ projects.”

Like the Formula One vehicles they’re used to working on, Hypetex supported Globe-Trotter’s ambition to produce a durable, but lightweight, case to survive knocks and bumps they may face alongside regular business travellers.

The 20-inch case from the luxury luggage firm has an outer shell that feature leather corners and straps, available in black or burgundy, as well as a lining in quilted microfiber. The limited edition cases are priced at £3,500 each.

“We were really impressed with the durability of the Hypetex material,” said Charlotte Seddon, designer at Globe-Trotter.

“It was easy to integrate into our existing design and offers our customers the option to have the highest standard of protection for a suitcase in our much-loved classic style.”

Owing to its luxury luggage and heritage, Globe-Trotter counts the likes of Queen Elizabeth, Winston Churchill and Robert Falcon Scott among clients. The Queen used a Globe-Trotter for her honeymoon luggage in 1947 and remains a brand advocate today, while Churchill opted for a Trotter Dispatch Case during his time as chancellor of the Exchequer in 1924.

Elsewhere, celebrities Daniel Craig, Eddie Redmayne and Kate Moss have got their hands on the luxury luggage too, with Craig’s James Bond in possession of a Globe-Trotter in his latest outing as the spy in Spectre.

The launch of the carbon fibre range will take place at the end of September. Goods can be bought from the luxury luggage firm’s website and flagship stores in London and Tokyo.
