A shining example that a simple husband-and-wife partnership can compete with some of the industry giants, State Oil is one of the largest oil importers and in the top 25 independent fuel retailers in the UK. Wholly owned by Winston Soosaipillai and his wife Arani, the company achieved sales of £75m in 2008, with pre-tax profits of £540,000. Only started in 2000, the business trades in oil, fuels and related products and its customer base includes fuel retailers (oil companies and resellers) and fleet users (leading shipping and container companies, distribution companies and corporate users). State Oil’s core product is diesel, blended with five per cent biodiesel – in line with new UK and EC standards that demand that there must be least a 2.5 per cent biodiesel content in fuel.
