20: Alpharooms

When the tour operator that Jason Fry worked for went bust, he struck out on his own to set up travel website Alpharooms.com. From working alone in a tiny “box room” in central Sheffield, Fry now employs 80 staff, turns over a tidy £5.5m and processes more than 150,000 hotel room bookings each year.

“Low-cost airlines were in their infancy when I started out in the late nineties,” says the Yorkshire entrepreneur. “I saw an opportunity to become one of the first online companies to offer low-cost accommodation rather than the typical package deals that were saturating the market.”
