20th anniversary of first secure online payment

Amazon and eBay followed a year later in 1995.

95 per cent of Brits are said to be shopping online, and the e-commerce industry to be worth £100bn.

Although the first secure online purchase was completed 20 years ago today, it was not the first online shopping transaction, ever.

That honour goes to Pizza Hut in early 1994, and a pepperoni pizza with mushrooms and extra cheese.

Mobile payments or ‘M-commerce’ followed 3 years later but never really took off until, with the rise of the smartphone, which is suddenly showing tremendous growth – up to $67.5bn (according to Business Insider).
