Hobson Prior is a recruitment staffing business in life-science organisations and the pharmaceutical industry. Started up by Matthew Perrett and Jane Woodhead in June 2002, the company has grown swiftly and expanded into Europe. Perret and Woodhead’s key to success? They train graduates from scratch so that they don’t have to rid their staff of bad habits acquired in previous employment. This rigorous attention to quality, coupled with a healthy cash balance, means that the firm is well-placed to cope with the credit crunch. Perrett says he expects increased competition from IT firms trying to move into the pharmaceutical industry but reckons Hobson Prior experience and unique methods will help the company to prosper. Turnover has grown from £1.4m in 2005 to £10.2m in 2008. The company made impressive pre-tax profits of £1.49m, bearing out Perrett’s insistence on watching the bottom line.
