Owner of North Yorkshire-based Fulford Builders Zoe Plummer told Real Business, with refreshing Northern candour, that she didn’t think it right to boast about the company’s previous achievements when she had just had to lay off staff because of the economic downturn. Nonetheless, she can be proud of Fulford’s achievements up until last year – sales reached £6.7m, almost doubling 2007’s figure of £3.9m. Fulford has achieved its success by using traditional building materials that have been forgotten or neglected in modern housebuilding. Timber floorboarding, timber sash windows, cast-iron rainwater goods all feature in the company’s designs and each house is individually designed to sympathetically reflect local architectural styles.
