Another company making its second successive appearance in the Hot 100 is Leeds-based Maria Mallaband Care Group. Founded in 1996 by Phil Burgan, who owns 92 per cent of the shares in the company, the group is named after his grandmother and now operates 47 homes throughout the UK. Its most recent acquisitions include Abbey Nursing Home in Bangor, Northern Ireland and Furze Hill Lodge in Surrey. Turnover has jumped from £5m in 2005 to £25m in 2008. Pre-tax profits jumped to £1.3m – this after the payment of a total dividend of £871,000, of which Burgan received a little more than £800,000. The figures say it all: Maria Mallaband has swiftly become one of the UK’s leading, privately owned care home groups. www.mmcg.co.uk
