35: AEGIS DEFENCE SERVICES

Aegis is a London-based, privately owned security and risk-management company with overseas offices in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bahrain and the US. The outbreak of the conflict in Iraq meant a boom for Aegis: the company is now one of the largest providers of personnel to both the Allied military and corporate sectors. As a consequence, turnover has ballooned from just £15m in 2005 to £74m in 2008. Unsurprisingly perhaps, Aegis’s headquarters are in Hereford – home of the SAS. The company was formed in 2002 by controversial ex-mercenary Tim Spicer, who owns 32 per cent of Aegis. Spicer himself failed to pass the entry test for the SAS, but many of the men who now work for Aegis are ex-SAS soldiers.
