Greenergy is now something of a fixture on the Hot 100. Since 2006, the bio-fuel giant has featured on the list every year. London-based Greenergy has, by far, the biggest turnover of the ranked companies. Last year, CEO Andrew Owens forecast 2008’s sales to be £1.6bn. Greenergy’s actual sales were a whopping £1.7bn. In essence, Greenergy is a wholesale fuel supplier, supplying over one-third of all bio-fuel in the UK since 2005. Owens and his team concentrate on market share, as margins are wafer-thin in this business. With the onset of a worldwide recession, the overall fuel market has shrunk considerably – but Greenergy is confident that it will increase its share of the market. As well as supplying customers with fuels with low environmental impact, the group has expertise in tracking greenhouse gas emissions, running carbon emission reduction projects and registering emission reductions for banking and verification. Since 2005, sales have grown eightfold from £436m to £1.724bn in the year to March 2008. Will Greenergy appear on next year’s Hot 100? It seems a sure thing. www.greenergy.co.uk
