6 amazing things scientists and doctors are doing with smartphones

6. Sniper tracking devices

A team of computer scientists at Vanderbilt University have developed an Android system that detects where gunfire is coming from. The purpose was to develop a transportable device to be fitted into military helmets.

The system automatically pulls up a map on the smartphone and as soon as someone fires a gun, red arrows point him/her out on the map. This device reads acoustic measurements to track and pinpoint the origin and trajectory of gunfire. The wireless sensors turn on microphones that pick up different sounds as they come into range, timing and calculating the speed of that sound.

By using smartphones, the scientists were able to create bluetooth headsets. When the location of a culprit is found, it is automatically passed on to everyone in the network.
