9: Probuild Birmingham

Shopfitter Anthony Sherlock started out as a sole trader, doing odd jobs for a handful of customers in the Midlands. Now the 48 year old runs Probuild, a £5m-turnover national building firm with 70 employees. If Tesco, Sainsbury’s or Iceland wants to refit one of its stores, it gets on the blower to Probuild.

Sherlock puts the company’s success down to quality control: “You’re only as good as your last job. If you mess up, that’s what your customers will remember.”
