Avalon Sciences designs and manufactures borehole seismic recording systems. In layman’s terms? The firm makes widgets to help oil companies find the black stuff. The industry has been plagued with fluctuating oil prices, environmental concerns and the need to squeeze every drop out of active wells, but this has been both a blessing and a curse for the Somerset-based firm. “We still have a pretty full order book,” says director Bill Hall. “We have designed the leading product to recover oil, using high-pressure gas or fluid to push oil out of formations without breaking the supporting rock.” And the high-tech firm has the edge on most of its competitors when it comes to heat-resistant products for hot, hostile wells. “We’ve overcome temperature limitations better than any other company,” says Hall. “We give our customers an extra 30 degrees over our competitors.” These cutting-edge systems don’t come cheap: an Avalon Sciences package will set you back anywhere between $600,000 and $4m. But you get the added advantage of five support centres around the world to ensure you get the most out of your oil field. “Over 50 countries in the world are using our equipment any given month,” says Hall. www.avalonsciences.com
