Ask Timpo: Should I ban personal calls?

A: If mobiles get a good signal in your office I can’t see why many people would need to use your land line.

Personal calls used to be a big problem but now the whole population spends their lives chatting on a cell phone we are faced with a completely different challenge  how do we keep colleagues away from constantly contacting their friends and family in the company’s time?

We are happy for our people to deal with urgent personal problems during the working day, indeed we have provided red telephone boxes in our office so that colleagues can make those important calls in privacy. But occasionally mobiles become too tempting – I bet every office of any size always has someone sending on a personal e mail or making an unnecessary call.

It is worth you sending out some guidelines but you will probably find them impossible to police. What matters most aren’t the mobiles but whether at the end of the day your colleagues have finished their job.
