Ask Timpo: Should I hand over the keys?

A: You can never be absolutely certain, but you have to trust somebody – you don’t want to become the sole keyholder and permanently on call in case of any emergency.

Go with your gut feeling and follow some common-sense guidelines. Only give the keys to people you’ve known for some time. However nice your new starters seem, you don’t want to put total trust in a near stranger.

Try the babysitting test. Ask yourself: “Would I be happy to leave this guy in charge of my children?”

There are certain signs that should make you think twice. Does he look you in the eye? Does he have expensive habits? Does he have a demanding partner?

Most people are basically honest and your instinct will almost certainly lead you to the right choice. Whoever you pick, though, keep a close eye on what they do.
