This consultation will be a great thing if it allows me – and other bosses – to employ those we want to hire.
As an employer who is taking a risk with my money and reputation every time I employ someone to wear my company uniform, why shouldn’t I be able to decide who I give a job to?
Employers need to be able to take control of their workforce. If I make a mistake and hire someone who turns out to be totally unsuitable, why must I spend time and money helping this person to adapt?
What’s even more infuriating is that this process seems to be designed in the employee’s favour. I end up having to make a new job just to suit a particular person. If I don’t, the employee can take me to court where, to be quite honest, the odds are not good if you happen to be the boss!
An Employer’s Charter would be a great thing if it banished these ludicrous practices to the past and allowed us to hire the right people. Surely this is just common sense?
Of course, this isn’t the be-all and end-all of solving the unemployment problem and fuelling a full economic recovery, but it’s a complete no-brainer when it comes to getting the ball rolling.
Any other system would be akin to picking the UK’s 2012 athletics squad from the fat farm and spending the next 18 months beating them into shape.
Does anyone think that will win us more medals than the Aussies?
