Britain’s 30 fastest-growing construction firms

A recent survey by Markit and the CIPS found that construction has been growing at the fastest rate since 2007, with sharp increases in output and employment.

Today’s research, published by Real Business and Jordans, reveals the construction firms leading the charge for a powerful growth in the sector.

The findings highlight a good geographical spread. Whilst businesses in London and the Home Counties dominate, there are a number of entries in northern England, the south-west, Scotland and Northern Ireland, showing you don’t have to be in the capital to grow a business at a decent rate.

1. Conlon Holdings Ltd.

Headquarters: Preston

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 231.37

This Preston-based construction company has posted blistering growth over the past three years. Conlon Construction does both new build and property development. It was worked on a number of eye-catching north-west landmarks including the Museum of Lancashire, the £4.3m Oracle youth centre in Blackpool and a multitude of schools and university buildings.

2. James Taylor Construction Ltd.

Headquarters: Hatfield

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 45.04

Operating in London and the Home Counties, James Taylor builds and redevelops both commercial and residential properties.

3. Larkfleet Ltd.

Headquarters: Bourne

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 31.46

Lincolnshire-based Larkfleet is a group of companies in the construction sector which offer housing and commercial developments, energy efficiency and other services. The company also offers bespoke to developments under its Larkfleet Exclusives brand.

4. City and Country Group PLC

Headquarters: Stansted

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 31.46

This Essex-based property developer specialises in developing “heritage” properties like old country homes and religious buildings. They also offer new-builds with traditional architecture and commercial property.

5. Lakehouse Ltd.

Headquarters: Romford

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 30.69

Lakehouse is a construction services company which offers project management, surveying and design, amongst other services. The firm specialises in public buildings including schools, swimming pools and health facilities.

6. Front Line Construction Ltd.

Headquarters: Glasgow

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 30.12

This company which operates across Scotland offers a range of services including groundworks, hard landscaping and earthworks. It also provides civil engineering services.

7. Reilly Holdings Ltd.

Headquarters: Eastleigh, Hampshire

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 28.92

The parent company of John Reilly Civil Engineering, which builds roads and carries out other civil engineering projects.

8. BDB Design Build Ltd.

Headquarters: Sheffield

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 27.54

BDB is a specialist building contractor which operates across the UK. It specialises in projects valued between £1m and £6m, in retail, mixed-use, sports and leisure, commercial offices, industrial and motor retail sectors.

9. GMI Construction Holdings PLC

Headquarters: Leeds

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 26.84

Formed in 1986, building firm GMC’s operations extend across the country. Eye-catching projects include Rotherham United’s 12,000 seater New York Stadium and Sheffield’s Millenium Copthorne Hotel.

10. Dhesi Group PLC

Headquarters: London

Three-year compound sales growth (%): 23.55

Formed in 1987, Dhesi group offers most construction services, from general building work to carpentry, diamond drilling, roofing and steelwork.
