“In difficult economic times I believe we need a tough system that offers British workers the first crack of the whip for British jobs,” commented Home Secretary Jacqui Smith. Bosses are currently obliged to advertise vacancies for up to two weeks in the UK before advertising overseas – but the job specs often appear only in obscure trade journals. The new rules will force these jobs to appear at the local Jobcentre Plus. Those that dare to break the rules could face fines of up to £10,000 for each illegal employee on the payroll. Will the new legislation ensure that British workers fill vacancies during the recession – or does it mean that entrepreneurs will miss out on immigrant talent? Let’s hear your views.
