Business Growth Plan: Have a not-to-do list

1 Mins

Over a three-week period, we are publishing daily tips from Britain’s fastest-growing companies on how to grow your business.

To grow your business, you need to have focus; don’t try to do everything under the sun. That’s the latest tip from our three-week Business Growth Plan.

Richard Harpin, founder of FTSE 250 business Homeserve, says you need to work out what it is you do.

“How many people have a to-do list?” he asks. “Forget that, you should have a not-to-do list for your business.”

Richard Harpin recommends first understanding your own strengths and weaknesses and then concentrate on what you’re good at, rather than trying to do everything. But it doesn’t mean you can’t dream big, either.

“My goal is for us to offer the best man-in-a-van service delivery – we’ll never do car repairs.”

This single-minded focus has helped Homeserve sign up 68 million households in six countries. Not too bad!

What would you put in your not-to-do list?
