In 1985, Jon Culverhouse gave up his job as a sports journalist on the Daily Mail to set up Fantastic Fireworks.
“I’d been obsessed with fireworks since childhood,” he explains. “Every year, we put on nearly 300 professional displays, while our network of shops supply the busy Bonfire Night market.”
Highlights include London’s first New Year’s Eve display on the Thames in 1997 and Sir Philip Green’s 55th birthday in the Maldives.
Culverhouse’s £1.4m-turnover firm also staged Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture celebrations (pictured), requiring 120 pyrotechnicians.
