The social network was originally exclusive to university students but has been free of those shackles for years. More recently, Facebook has turned its attention to businesses, namely SMEs, which will have played a key role in helping the firm achieve its latest milestone.
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and CEO, made the announcement on his Facebook page and spoke of how proud he is of the firm’s progress and that the user base leads to a stronger economy .
In August, the firm enhanced its support for entrepreneurs with a new private messaging feature to enrich communications between consumers and business owners. And, in a bid to give recognition to enterprises harnessing customer service, pages can be rewarded responsive badges.
“We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day. On Monday [24 August], 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family,” Zuckerberg said.
“When we talk about our financials, we use average numbers, but this is different. This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it’s just the beginning of connecting the whole world.

With financials in mind, the firm achieved a revenue of over $4bn in Q2 2015, up from $2.9bn the previous year.
Meanwhile, daily active users sat at 968m in June 844m of which came via mobile and monthly active users sat at 1.49bn for the month with 1.31bn via mobile.
