Telling the truth about SME life today

Copycats won’t win

"Copycat strategy has been the secular religion of most business managers," observes Steve Heilbron, global head of Investec Private Bank, kicking off the 2009 Real Business Entrepreneurs’ Summit.

Heilbron reckons that while business models were being tested and wealth was being destroyed by the current recession, this is also a time when new business models are emerging and substantial new wealth being created.

Hence why copycat strategies aren’t the answer. "The winners will be those who seek to out-think, rather than out-muscle, their competitors," he says. "The entrepreneurs who win will be those who run a different race."

Hear, hear, Steve. Those are really strong opening comments for a day about reinventing your business!
