Dyson set to launch robotic vacuum cleaner?

In a mysterious video launched by the company on Youtube this week, Dyson engineers can be seen tinkering with what appear to be autonomous machines:

The video is accompanied by the text: “16 years. 200 engineers. £28m investment. The result? Tell us what you think it is.”

The video follows news in February of a partnership between Imperial College London and Dyson to fund a new robotics centre.

The Dyson Robotics Laboratory is focused on developing computer programmes which can better understand the world around them.

Sir James didn’t comment on this week’s video but at the lab’s launch in February he said: “My generation believed that the world would be overrun by robots by the year 2014.

“We have the mechanical and software capabilities, but we still lack understanding – machines that see and think in the way that we do. Mastering this will make our lives easier and lead to previously unthinkable technologies.”
