The 18th annual Amazon Growing Business Awards are back with a bang on 30 November, but before then we need your help to determine which business will take the coveted Employer of the Year prize home.
We’ve got a shortlist bursting with innovation, achievement and drive to put staff first and foremost. In this article you get to hear from Health@Work about why it feels worthy of the accolade, but make sure to check out the other seven companies vying for your vote before making a selection.
The Health@Work Employer of the Year pitch
Health@Work has taken part in the national Workplace Wellbeing Charter and was externally assessed and verified. The business provides staff with flexible working options to minimise the stresses of life and help with productivity – being constantly stuck office is not good for anyone. We are always striving to work better and smarter. Giving our employees the time and the space to breathe and take in different environments is a great benefit to both our staff and our business.
Being an office full off health and wellbeing lovers, the fridge constantly has fresh fruit and water available for staff to nibble on – a cheeky bit of chocolate or crisps is ok, but only occasionally. The company has developed a Walking Lunch programme in partnership with the Liverpool Business Improvement District and encourages the team (and others) to take full advantage of this opportunity. Not only are the walks great for getting out of the office and improving health, they offer great educational benefits due to the fact they are led by a tour guide sharing nuggets of information and history with regards to particular buildings, streets and monuments around the commercial district.
Not only are we helping our employees, but Health@Work is helping everyone else’s. Like every other business, our staff are our life blood, that is why we do everything we can to support their development and growth – if our employees grow, our company grows. With this in mind, we offer regular team training sessions, a budget for staff to request training which is both linked to appraisals and one-on-ones. Certain employees are trained in neuro‐linguistic programming, cognitive behavioural therapy and stress management. Targets are set for development work and support is offered internally, managers have had management coaching and we pay membership of professional bodies. In addition to this, Health@Work also works closely with local apprenticeship and work experience schemes to offer a foot on the career ladder to local young people. We also encourage staff to challenge themselves (within supportive framework) to lead on projects.
The company has a real commitment towards diversity and equality starting with our equality and diversity policy. The organisation has signed up to Time To Change in order to end mental health discrimination and fosters a culture of support and openness. With that comes our open office policy where anyone is free to talk about anything – personal or general – to anyone. Due to people living and working longer, mental health conditions such as alzheimer’s and dementia are becoming more prevalent in the workplace prompting Health@Work to sign up to the Dementia Action Alliance.
Last summer the company wrote and published a topic guide on equality and diversity for Public Health England. Health@Work also offers above the statutory pension and because health is wealth we offer health cover for our employees through Westfield Health.
