The Somerset-based family farm is a finalist in the South West England and South Wales region of the bank’s £35m Entrepreneur Challenge. It is competing with four other entrepreneurial businesses to win the package, which is free of interest and charges for three years.
Wyke Farms has been in the Clothier family for three generations. It is the largest independent cheesemaker and milk processor in the UK, producing more than 12,000 tonnes of cheddar per year. Clothier says: “Although we keep tradition and heritage close to our hearts, we are prepared to innovate within the cheese category in order to challenge the big PLCs and become the largest brand in cheddar within the next two years.
“A £5m funding package will help our family business from Somerset to quite literally eat the big fish and achieve our goal of becoming one of the biggest dairy brands in the UK.”
