Feel-good Friday: Levi Roots leads superhero-fused food workshop for children

Earlier this year, Levi Roots debuted his Westfield-based restaurant, the Caribbean Smokehouse. Of course, the menu features food inspired by his native Jamaica, but the more unique aspect of the food enterprise is its use of tech.

The venue comes with a variety of services including pay-at-table tech from Flypay, the company delivering the same support for the likes of Jamies Italian and Wahaca.

His newest endeavour, meanwhile, has seen him align with the Food Academy, exhibition firm Excel and its catering partner Levy Restaurants to nurture a group of schoolchildren from the local area.

A group of lucky students from Oasis Academy Silvertown in Newham won a competition ran by the companies, which saw Roots enlisted to help encourage and mentor the youngsters.

The campaign had the pupils work with Roots at the Excel London to help produce Caribbean meals of jerk chicken wings and fruity coleslaw at the venues waterfront caf . In addition to making them aware of healthy eating, the goal was to offer insights and education about careers and business opportunities in the food industry.

Diabetes UK is also part of the initiative, which will culminate with the young cooks whipping up some treats at the MCM London Comic Con event at Excel London, running across the weekend of 27-29 May.

I know more than anyone the importance of eating well for families, including my own. Eating a balanced diet along with regular exercise could help prevent Type 2 diabetes, a problem affecting many of the poorest communities in the UK,” said Roots.

So I am delighted to support the Food Academy, Diabetes UK, Excel London, the children of Oasis Silvertown and the superheroes of MCM London Comic Con in showing how easy and fun it is to cook delicious food that is healthy.”

A recent development in the food industry has seen brother-built sushi business Maki expand its operation to compete against large rivals Itsu and Wasabi.
