Telling the truth about SME life today

Frances Brindle

Name: Frances Brindle

Age: Older than I would like

Company: British Library

First job: Graduate Trainee at Nestle

Dream job: CEO of the World Wildlife Fund

Car: Mercedes AMG convertible (I know I should swap it for something more environmentally friendly, particularly in the light of the dream job)

Economy, business or first class: First Class when my husband lets me use his air miles. I’m finding it increasingly difficult to turn right.

Most extravagant purchase: The Mercedes, I was on my way to buy a Lexus hybrid when I saw it on the forecourt.

Most played song on the iPod: Anything by the Fratellis

Best business book: I don’t read business books. The Harvard Business Review covers more ground with less repetition.

Worst business moment: Realising that I had inadvertently copied someone on an email trail that mentioned their redundancy before they had been told. Lesson learned: always read the whole trail, not just the last couple of messages. We had to wipe their inbox.

Proudest business moment: I’m torn between winning the Campaign Gold award for the FT advertising campaign “We Live in Financial Times” and selling out of Foster’s Iced Beer before we’d even officially launched it.

Your business mentor: No-one unfortunately. But I do have a very supportive and inspiring boss.

Next Big Thing: Finally finishing the novel and finding a sponsor for the British Library Business and IP Centre.
