Telling the truth about SME life today

Lost temper utterly and retired to office at home with left hand in close pursuit, having seemingly made no progress in sorting out all our continuing staffing problems and where we are going.

Had hugely productive time and within three hours flat, managed several out-of-the-box tweaks to the company structure, new policies on accountability and quality and a financial plan to see us through the second half of the year.

Huge lesson to be learnt – and remembered this time! –  as to just how impossible it is to actually do the job of management well with constant interruptions from hysterical staff who cannot wait to shift their responsibilities. Oddly enough, with us off site, staff have had to be big grown-ups and we return to a vastly cleaned up floor area, some voluntary training going on in another corner and a general air of purpose and happiness that has been lacking. I think a lot of the times less hand holding is definitely more.
