The company: Orlebar Brown
The bosses: Adam Brown and Julia Simpson-Orlebar
Former photographer Adam Brown and lawyer Julia Simpson-Orlebar decided men ought to have something a bit more tasteful to wear on the beach than scruffy boardshorts or (cringe!) budgie smugglers, so, in 2007, the pair founded high-end fashion range for men Orlebar Brown.
Brown says: “Orlebar Brown shorts are not so much swim shorts as ‘a short you can swim in’. They can be worn on and off the beach, by the pool, in a bar, beach club or hotel.”
The shorts retail between £95 and £199, and Brown and Simpson-Orlebar have cracked distribution to the right stores: Orlebar Brown dominates the men’s swimwear section in Selfridges. Other accounts include Harrods, Liberty, and Bergdorf Goodman, as well as department stores in Canada and Hong Kong, totalling 200 stockists worldwide. Gary Lineker, Matthew Pinsent and Patrick Cox are fans of the brand.
