Running up until the general election on 7 May, the feature series will involve senior business leaders from all walks of life. Together they will form an important analysis into what the next government must to do further encourage enterprise.
Who are you and what does your business do?
I’m Clive Ormerod, managing director of OMS. We specialise in providing training and compliance solutions, working with clients ranging from SMEs to blue chip organisations with clients including AIG, Balfour Beatty, BT, Caterpillar, Molson Coors and Morgan Sindall.
As well as providing tailored training packages and consultancy for large organisations, we also run nationally recognised courses on subjects including general health and safety, construction site safety, first aid, fire safety and leadership and management. We’re based in Bardon Hill, Leicestershire, but we operate nationwide.
How has your business changed over the last five years?
The most significant change has been the opening of our new headquarters in the East Midlands, which are equipped with a practical training facility for practising working at height, scaffolding and other on-site skills. The centre, which we refurbished after taking over the building, also has four dedicated training rooms with state-of-the-art facilities.
What are your growth plans for the next five years?
We’re ambitious for growth in the near future and beyond. We are increasing our full-time staff to 12 people and see that trend continuing in future. We recently extended our senior management team with a number of new appointments, including Tam Bream, Business Development Manager, with the aim of bringing OMS additional major contracts. Sales and net profit are forecast to almost double from two years ago.
As well as expanding our training facilities, we plan to open other locations in the UK based on our current business model.
What kind of government would you like to see elected?
The improvement in the economy has created a situation where ambitious organisations such as OMS can grow so we want to see a government that will balance the books and control spending and maintain an environment in which we can meet our goals. However, a good deal of our work is in the HR area so we understand the importance that governments can make in the workplace through appropriate support in areas such as child minding and paternity leave.
It’s also important that government takes care of people. Even from a purely economic standpoint, businesses don’t exist in a vacuum, so we have to address the health and other issues faced by a growing and ageing population. I would sum that up as a government that takes care of business and people.

Do you think government in general is doing enough to support businesses of your size?
The most important thing any government can do for growing businesses such as ours is maintain a climate where success is achievable and rewarded. I am fortunate to have a background of working with big organisations, which helps us to bid successfully for contracts with major companies, but more still needs to be done to open doors to smaller businesses so that they can win public procurement contracts.
Has the impending general election caused any uncertainty regarding how you run your company?
I think there is a sense of uncertainty out there about what kind of government we are going to get, with no clear front runner and the possibility of an uncomfortable coalition. I wouldn’t say that has translated into people putting off decisions regarding training projects yet, but it could do.
We have given some thought to the likely outcomes and believe that we are agile enough to adapt to changing political landscapes. There is nothing so far that suggests an imminent change in the prognosis for the UK economy but if something happens post-election to bring that about, we know we can respond to the challenges it may bring.
