In-house training has yielded further savings and overall operating costs have been cut by three per cent. The Investors in People national standard was achieved in 2008 at the first attempt. There’s a whole slew of initiatives, including “Me Days” (extra days off for exceptional achievement), a “Friday’s Fridge” in its café for an end-of-the-week wind-down, and a quarterly “employment happiness survey.” You only need to look at the figures to see that all of this effort is working – sales were up 22 per cent last year. BEcause HR director Polly Barnes is collecting the award… she jokes that everyone at home has been texting the team at the awards, asking whether they’ve won. “I’m going to text them now to let them know,” she quips.
