The Federation of Small Businesses estimates that one-in-five workers will fail to reach work today, at a cost of £1.2bn to the British economy.

Those who do make it into the City face gloomy news. The FTSE 100 index has fallen by over 2.5 per cent to 4042 points.

“All businesses will be affected by weather like this, so they need to prepare to avoid unnecessary downtime," comments Stephen Beynon, MD of ntl:Telewest Business. He says that home broadband connections and remote working facilities are "crucial" if businesses are to avoid lost revenue.

Just last week, Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report called for universal 2MBps broadband access for the UK by 2012.Snow in the UK is currently the most popular subject on the microblogging site Twitter, outstripping even last night’s Super Bowl.
