On the brink of turning 50, former Deloitte accountant Don Wildey found himself at a crossroads: should he a) retire or b) start taking the company he’d been running for the past ten years seriously and turn it into a proper business.
You can guess which road he picked. London-based Business Research Group, which is part classic market research, part management consultancy, now employs 120 people, pulls in sales of £10.3m and has an international focus. “More than 90 per cent of our business is done outside the UK,” explains Wildey. “Our biggest market is the States.”
Business Research Group has been entirely self funded since it was founded in 1990 (“I don’t want to have to ask private equity investors permission to use the toilet!”). Wildey, now 63, plans on exiting the business in two to three years, most likely via an MBO.
