Founded by Peter Done in 1967, Warrington-based Betfred has more than 1,350 betting shops with a turnover of £4.1bn.
How on earth a firm this size keeps growing at 54 per cent a year? Done says: “We have grown so fast over the last four years by organic growth, acquiring the Tote and making sure we are very different on the High Street compared to our competitors. No one offers the bonuses like we do.”
He says online is important, but won’t change the old shop format. “There will always be a place for a betting shop. In fact in many areas they are very much part of the community and people like to go in to socialise.”
Something else which won’t change is his unique management style. “Meetings do happen,” he says, “but they are normally over a cup of coffee in my office on a Saturday morning.” Not many multi-billion pound firms can say that. But then not many can match Betfred’s performance.
