Severn & Wye Smokery founder Richard Cook is modest about his business’ speedy growth rate. “We’re not the sort of business that likes to shout about its successes. To be honest we like being the best kept secret in the industry – one that people come to for quality and not hype,” he says in response to a question about the secret of Severn’s success.
The business supplies gourmet fish, game and meat products and has a restaurant that is popular with local residents and tourists. The business is also an active supporter of the Sustainable Eel Group and donates elvers to schools every time an eel dish is bought and eaten.
Its shop sells products from local producers in Gloucestershire and the South West of England on top of its own goods.
Severn & Wye turns over £25.6m, an increase of £16m in four years, while earnings before tax increased by around £300,000 in its most recent accounts compared to the previous year.
