When the weather turns cold, councils across the UK suddenly realise they are just a bit short on salt. So who do they ring? Well, since 1874, JC Peacock has been supplying salt to the gentry, to councils and to whoever wants a sack of the stuff.
Back then John Craig Peacock sent his ships as far as Brazil and North America, sending salt for curing and bringing back ice and timber. Today, JC Peacock sells road salt, cosmetic salt, food salt, water softening salt and industrial salts, direct to consumers and in bulk to trade buyers.
Now run by Harley Marshall, the great-grandson of Old Man Peacock, the firm is based in Ayr on Scotland’s west coast. Sales have risen to £48.3m – a sign that councils have realised that the public aren’t too happy with icy roads whenever the mercury plunges.
