How can businesses recruit their dream team?

Business leaders are usually quick to thank their team when recognised with awards, giving interviews or making speeches.

While this can often seem like this is just a question of going through the motions, it would be fair to say that most successful entrepreneurs have got to where they are today thanks to the hard work and creative input of those around them, as well as their own.

From your first hire to your 1,000th employee, building the right team is one of the most important things to get right in a growing business. The right mix of creative, skilled and motivated people can transform a small company into a corporate behemoth, but just one bad hire can kill the atmosphere if not dealt with correctly.

As the job market picks up again, the competition for staff will get increasingly fierce. A Recruitment and Employment Confederation report published last month suggested that availability of staff fell by the furthest amount since 1997, pushing up permanent starting salaries for the 26th month in a row.

For the month of August, Real Business will be focusing on the topic of recruitment to help you build the right team to take your business forward.

In particular we’ll be looking at how businesses can attract the right candidates and where to seek them out, how to conduct effective interviews and whether you need to use a recruitment consultant. We’ll also take a look at the controversial world of headhunting, as well as considering the legal issues you need to be aware of when recruiting.

Have you got any useful recruiting insights to share? Perhaps an unusual interview technique you use to weed out the best candidates or a cautionary tale for other businesses to avoid? We’d love to hear from you – get in touch editors@realbusiness.co.uk
