The West Midlands-based family business bought Roberts Testing, which is based in the US state of Georgia.
Gordon says: “Doing the acquisition in the US was at times quite stressful but I think once you get the right people – such as attorneys – working for you, and with the internet and so forth, it’s not too bad. The time difference is a problem but the acquisition was fairly straightforward.”
He also recommends actually visiting the site you’re buying, regardless of the cost. “I took our MD, myself and our accountant to look in depth at all the figures and the way it was run,” Gordon says.
Georgia, he continues, is a good place to do business. “It’s on the right side of the States for us so that cuts down on travel time and expenses,” he says. “The capital, Savannah, has a big port that can be directly linked to our business and it’s got some fairly good connections, being in the South as well. We’re looking at Brazil and South America and being in Georgia brings us that much closer.”
