An excellent book launch party in the Waterloo Room at the Institute of Directors (IoD): John Timpson’s new book, How to ride a giraffe, was unveiled.
Naturally, John had much explaining to do about the title. Apparently, it stems from a journalist asking Rod Umpleby – a plain-speaking Yorkshireman who was a long-standing member of the Timpson team – about the working life at the shoe repair chain.
"I think of the Timpson business as a giraffe," he told the journalist (no PR minders at Timpson). "It has evolved and been shaped by events – no-one could have possibly planned to produce a business like this, but it works."
